The effect of potassium iodine (KI) in recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) was compared with placebo in a randomized, double-bling, placebo controlled study. Thirty-five patients with RAS were included. KI capsules were administered to 20 patients as 900 mg/dail in 3 divided doses for the first week 300 mg/daily in a single dose for the following two week. Placebo capsules were administered in the same manner. Patients were assessed monthly for four months. The number of aphthae, the remission period ad the number of attacks were noted during the follow up. The number of aphthae decreased in the KI group. At the end of four months no significant difference was observed between the two grous. Taking into consideration that KI therapy has fewer adrese effects compared with other therapy modalities, it max be an altternative therapy to RAS.
