Allergic rhinosinusitis: conservative or surgical treatment

Allergic rhinosinusitis has been a global health or social-health problem for many years both for high prevalence and the significant complications that may arise and for its inevitable with chronicle inflammation of lower respiratory tracts. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal treatment of allergic rhinosinusitis. Study design: retrospective-prospective controlled study Means and methods: 1.Comparison and evaluation of patients with allergic rhinosinusitis treated with conservative or surgical treatment. 2. Suggestion of algorithm for treatment of allergic rhinosinusitis according to obtained results. We have questioned 30 patients treated with local therapy and with proven allergy and with changes on nose and sinuses mucosa. Second group consisted of other 30 patients treated with surgical (minimal and/or radical) treatment and with proven allergy and with changes on nose and sinuses mucosa. Third group consisted of other 30 patients treated with combined treatment: local therapy and surgical treatment. Findings (numerical and/or statistical): Study included 90 patients, which are separated in three groups of 30 patients. Justified effectiveness of conservative treatment was on 60% of patients, minimal surgical treatment was on 73.3% of patients, and combined treatment was on 93.3%. Conclusion: Combined treatment: local application of steroids and surgical treatment gained the best results. Nose obstruction, anosmia or hyposmia, frontal or posterior rhinorrhea, teardrop, sneezing and face pains are significantly improved. These are preliminary results. The research continues.
